If you love chocolate, nature and observing wild animals in their natural habitat such as monkeys, sloths and colored frogs, this is the perfect tour for you.
We start the tour from the Puerto Limón Cruise Dock to the Cahuita National Park community. After a pleasant 45-minute bus ride through the beautiful Caribbean coast of Costa Rica and enjoying the extensive explanations of our guide, we will arrive at Cacao Trails Tayku, a place where we will have the opportunity to learn everything about this wonderful fruit as it is the Cocoa and how it is transformed into one of the most desired products around the world: Chocolate.
In this property, managed by a local family with more than 100 years of chocolate tradition, you will be able to know its history and how it has managed to survive through time. Accompanied by expert local guides, we will visit the cocoa plantations to learn about the plant, the cultivation techniques, its fruits, harvest, and processing of the seeds until we reach the final product: Chocolate.
In the process you will be able to taste a fresh cocoa bean and delight in its sweet taste and you will be amazed at how different it is before processing.
On the tour we will have the opportunity to visit the Cocoa Museum, which has been created by this family collecting artifacts, machinery and instruments that are used to make chocolate. In this museum, you will have the opportunity to make your own chocolate guided by indigenous women who will teach you the process with their traditional methods combining various natural ingredients such as sea salt, vanilla, nutmeg, black pepper, hot chili, and others. And best of all, you will enjoy eating a lot of chocolate of different flavors.
You can also visit an U SULE; the traditional conical ranch of the Bri Bri and Cabecar Indians, used by the Shamans for cures, acts and social ceremonies for thousands of years. Around this ranch, you can learn about medicinal plants and how the Shamans used them to cure the ills of their community.
As you walk the trails of the CACAO TRAIL TAYKU you will have the opportunity to see poison frogs, giant ants, spiders, and scorpions, as well as howler monkeys, iguanas, sloths, armadillos and other native species that can be seen quite easily in the top of the trees.
At the Organic Banana Farm, you will learn the traditional methods of organic cultivation. You will take a step inside the Historical Monument that celebrates the old Punta Riel train station, where the route of the traditional “Burro Carril” ended, that train that transported cocoa and banana bunches.
At the end of this wonderful cultural experience, you will continue the journey to Tortuguero Canal for a boat tour along this ecosystem, where many wildlife species will be easy to see, including sloths, aquatic birds and with some good luck, monkeys.
After all this amazing ecological and cultural experience, return to the pier.

Amazing tour with a wonderful guide
The chocolate tour is a superb experience especially if you are guided by the beautiful and immensely charming Carolina, a fount of information, sly humor and magic. The chocolate you will eat is prepared by the lovely Theresa and is stunningly tasty. The setting is a tropical rain forest with iguanas, howler monkeys, humming birds and the occasional viper. A truly worthwhile experience.

Great guide and outstanding venue
We had a great day beginning with out tour guide, Alberto with Greenway Nature Day Tours. He was on time, picking us up at the pier in a very comfortable Hyundai mid-size SUV. He provided bottled water, and was great in answering our questions along the way about Costa Rican culture, life, and some of the great things Costa Rica is doing, as well as challenges for the future of the country. Alberto was also very accommodating, stopping a few times along the way to allow us to take pictures at scenic sights. Once at the site of the chocolate tour and suspension bridge hike, Carolina took over as our guide. She has an undergraduate in biology from the University of Costa Rica. She was very knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna, as well as pointing out different insect, amphibian, and tropical wildlife while hiking to the jungle cultivation site. The walk across the suspension bridge was amazing, with wonderful views of the river and the surrounding area. With her co-worker Theresa, they talked us through the traditional method of producing chocolate from the cacao, including cultivation and its historical impact both locally and globally.

Perfect from the start!
We were recommended by a close friend to try a coffee or chocolate tour. His recommendation turned out to payout so much in the positive I cannot thank him enough; but I would caveat that the experience we had that was so meaningful all started with our driver/guide.
Luis showed up on time, greeted us, got us to the car, which was clean, nice and very comfortable. Our conversations just seemed to flow as if we had known each other for a life time; talking about everything and anything and providing us with great insight on Costa Rica. The drive was 1 hour, but didn’t seem that way because of the good conversations had by us all. Once we arrived at the bioreserve; Luis got us all squared away with the tour company and because we had a considerable amount of time before the tour; he took us on a mini tour which allowed us to see a sloth and most importantly to me; a poison dart frog! My hearing is pretty bad, but Luis was able to focus in on the singing little guy and point it out for me to grab a picture of it! We got back and went on our tour with Walter. Walter did a great job sharing the history of chocolate and how to make chocolate bars. It was the best. By first time I was able to try my own processed chocolate bar.
