Puerto Caldera is the main port on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, it is where most goods are imported and exported. It is also one of the cruise ships ports in Costa Rica, so you will see many cruise ships docking at this port.
Puerto Caldera is located at only 20 minutes from Puntarenas City, the other most important port for cruise ships, and where many attractions, bars and restaurants are located.
The area where the port is located its not a touristy region. It is basically a cargo pier with no good places to explore from. If you are planning explore the area on your own, walking or taking a cab, be advise that this is not the best option. If you don´t book a Puerto Caldera shore excursion, you better stay onboard and enjoy the day at the cruise ship swimming pool.
