What to Expect on Your Poas Volcano Day Trip

Your breathtaking private adventure begins with a prompt pickup from your hotel in San Jose or the surrounding areas (including Escazu, Sabana, and Alajuela). You will enjoy a relaxing private drive through the wonderful Costa Rican countryside in a recent-model deluxe vehicle or minibus, heading toward the Alajuela Province. The scenic drive to the volcano takes about 90 minutes.

On the way, you will take in the beautiful rural scenery, passing dairy farms, tropical flower nurseries, strawberry plantations, local cheese factories, and picturesque souvenir stands. You will also have the chance to taste local flavors and try a Prestiño—a traditional, crispy fried pastry covered in a special sweet syrup made in traditional sugar mills.

Exploring the Active Crater

Once at Poas Volcano National Park, your guide will lead you on a short walk to the main crater lookout. For security and safety reasons, visits to the crater are organized in small groups accompanied by park rangers, with a maximum stay of 30 minutes per group.

Poas is a powerful active volcano that has erupted 40 times since 1828. Standing at an elevation of 2,708 meters above sea level (8,885 feet), it features two stunning crater lakes near the summit:

• Laguna Caliente (Hot Lagoon): The northern lake is located inside a massive crater approximately 1.7 km wide and 300 meters deep. It is one of the world’s most acidic lakes and holds the distinction of being one of the largest active craters on earth.

• Lake Botos: The southern lake fills an inactive crater that last erupted around 7500 BC. This cold, crystal-clear lagoon is beautifully surrounded by a dense, pristine cloud forest.

After exploring the national park, we will make short, pleasant stops at local attractions, souvenir shops, and artisanal fruit stands before heading back.
