Poas Volcano Tour Description:
Your breath-taking, adventure begins with a pickup from your hotel and a relaxing private drive through the wonderful Costa Rican countryside on an air-conditioned transportation and recent model deluxe vehicle or minibus. You will be heading to Alajuela Province and them the Volcano, about 90-minute drive from San Jose.
On the way, enjoy the beautiful scenery of the countryside with multiple Dairy Farms, Tropical Flowers Nurseries, Strawberries Plantations, Cheese Factories, picturesque souvenir stores and small local vendors. Taste the local flavors and give yourself a chance to try a Prestiño, a very traditional tin pastry cover with a special typical syrup made in the sugar mills.
Once at the Poas Volcano National Park, the visit to the crater will be in small groups accompanied with a park ranger and for only 30 minutes per group for security reasons.
Poas is an active volcano, that has erupted 40 times since 1828. It has an elevation of 2.708 meter above sea level (8.885 feet). There are two crater lakes near the summit. The northern lake is known as the Laguna Caliente (“hot lagoon”) and is located at a height of 2,300 m in a crater approximately 1.7 km wide and 290–300 m deep. It is one of the world’s most acidic lakes and possible the largest crater in the world. Lake Botos, the southern lake, fills an inactive crater, which last erupted in 7500 BC. It is cold and clear and is surrounded by a cloud forest within the National Park boundaries.
Poas Volcano National Park is the most visited one by locals and international tourist from all over the world.
After the park visit, we will include short stops at different local attractions such as souvenir stores, dairy farms and small restaurants.

Our guide Gerardo was on time, very professional in the way he dealt with all the arrangements he had to make. He had a very personable style and was very easy to communicate with. He was very well informed about Poas volcano. I would highly recommend this tour.

great volcano tour
We were lucky: the volcano gods smiled on us and although there were heavy clouds over San Jose there were no clouds over the volcano. There was a lot of volcanic smoke and gas inside the crater, but that is a large part of the attraction! The smoke came and went and we got occasional good clear views down to the bubbling crater lake. It was a good experience.

A perfect day visiting a volcano in action!
The guide was personable, professional and had the good fortune to take us to see Poas Volcano when it was erupting. He made sure we had fun photos of our visit. The drive there and back was highlighted by a coffee plantation visit and a couple stops to buy local organically grown strawberries and plums. We had a private tour but all their tours are quite small. Highly recommended!
